The 13th International Conference on the Stability of Ships and Ocean Vehicles (STAB 2018) will be held in Kobe, Japan, from 16th to 21st of September 2018.
Call for Papers
Stability, which is a ability to prevent capsizing of a floating body, is one of the most fundamental element s in ship design, and can be regarded as unique in naval architecture for many years since the days of Archimedes (circa 250 BC). Although our knowledge and design tools for ship motions in waves were almost sufficiently improved mainly based on linear theories, the stability issues still remains as hot research topics to be scientifically resolved because of its inherent nature of nonlinearity.
The stability conference launched possibly under this demand in 1975 in Glasgow and then its second conference was held in 1982 in Tokyo. These conferences contributed very much to the development of weather criterion, to supplement pure empirical ship stability criteria, with researchers, designers and so on. In 2018 the stability conference will revisit Japan. During these 43 years, the stability conferences continuously facilitate ship stability criteria developments for intact and damage ships at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and novel ship designs all over the world. The coming conference in 2018 is expected to provide scientific and practical bases for discussing new stability criteria such as risk-based and/or physics-based ones and their applications to innovative ships and ocean vehicles.
We look forward to welcoming the stability conference in 2018 on behalf of research community of ship stability in Japan together with Japan’s administrations, classification societies, shipyards and relevant industries. Kobe has been a place to meet traditions and innovations as a gateway to Asia and then the world whenever we use shipping. We sincere hope that all stakeholders would get together, discuss stability and then horizons to be extended by further innovative ships and ocean vehicles beyond the fruitful traditions.
NOTICE
The conference will be held together with the 7th International Maritime Conference on DESIGN FOR SAFETY (DfS 2018) at the same venue and the same period for forming wider community of maritime safety. The participants are allowed to attend both conferences without additional fee.
